B Is for Balance - Everything That Happened to You Is Stored in Your Body
If we are truly going to reach a state of complete wellness, we have to listen to our bodies. What does that mean? It means to learn to “hear” the feelings and sensations that are moving in our bodies 24 / 7 so that we are in tune with the pain and discomfort before they reach crisis level.
Having some experience with knowing what body awareness means we can build on the awareness and recognize how the way we feel affects the way we act.
You have a choice. You either plow through your day unaware of how your feelings are affecting you. Or, you pay attention to your internal well-being and recognize when your body needs your attention. What is the benefit of choosing the latter? You are not controlled by what you refuse to feel; instead, you are in synergy with your internal landscape, aware and awake and body-mind connected, and you behave accordingly.
When you catch yourself being angry, moody, or depressed, it’s essential to remember to stop and see where you are, so you know where to go.
I have a Balance-Behavior Check-In Practice called “Stop. Drop. Check...Choose.” that is designed to help you do just that:
Step 1. Stop and ask your Self, "Do I feel safe?" If the answer is "yes", notice what you’re paying attention to.
Step 2. Drop. Exhale and let go of your breath and, as with the hour-glass, simply bring your attention into your body.
Step 3. Check. What are you feeling in your body right now and where? Any body sensations such as tension, pressure, or just discomfort? Emotions? A specific mood? Stay in this step for a few minutes. Allowing it to be will set you up for Step 4.
Step 4. Choose. Having done this Balance-Body practice, you now know by experience that you actually have a choice in how you behave based on how you feel. How do you want to behave? How can you get there? What can you do to feel better now? You can choose.
This practice is important for three reasons: (1) It helps you become present in the moment. (2) It teaches you, over time, that when you give space to your emotions and don’t resist them, often they shift on their own. (3) It demonstrates that the more you can allow your emotions, feelings, and sensations to just be, the more empowered you become.
Watch what an empowered day you can have when you live fully aware of your body-mind.
